Auto Repair and Maintenance Services

From scheduled maintenance services to major engine and mechanical repairs, Stanford Avenue Automotive of Santa Cruz does it all.   We can service any make and any model - cars, pickups, vans, trucks and SUVs - both foreign and domestic.  In addition to "regular" work we specialize in "hard to fix" problems in today's technologically advanced cars, including drivability problems associated with engine and transmission, failed emission test, warning lights (Check Engine, ABS, Air Bag, SRS, ASR and all other lights on instrument cluster), heating and A/C, charging and starting, and instrument clusters.

As the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) states: "Auto repair is more complicated than ever. Vehicles keep getting more complex, while technology and diagnostic tools constantly change as well."

Thus, aside from honesty, integrity, and exceptional customer service, two of the most important aspects of providing the highest quality auto repair and maintenance service are:  1) the training and expertise of the mechanics, and 2) the tools they use.

ASE Certification

All of our mechanics are ASE certified, but what does that mean?  Auto technicians who want to become ASE certified take one or more of ASE’s 40-plus exams.  The exams stress knowledge of job-related skills. The tests are no cinch to pass; in fact, usually only two out of every three test-takers pass on their first attempt.   After passing at least one exam and providing proof of two years of relevant work experience, the test-taker becomes ASE certified.  To remain certified, ASE-certified professionals must be retested every five years.

ASE tests are divided into "Test Series", each covering a particular discipline within the automotive industry.   You earn Master Technician status when you achieve certification in all the required testing areas.  Master Technician status is not for life, and you must keep each one of those certifications current in order to maintain it.  Thus, your  mechanics at Stanford Avenue Automotive are continually training to stay current not just with their ASE certification, but on the latest technologies and information.

Automotive Repair Tools

Today's automobiles are complex machines and many of their functions are controlled by onboard computers.  Maintaining and repairing your car or truck requires equally sophisticated tools - not just to properly diagnose, repair or service your car, but to do so in the most time efficient manner, which translates into cost effective, which means you pay less and your car is out of our shop quicker.

For example, we use the VERUS® Diagnostic and Information System.  This tool provides deep coverage for many vehicle systems, including engine, transmission, body controls, instrument, ABS, airbag, transfer case, TPMS, and many others  It over two million component fault-finder tests including meter presets, connector diagrams with hookup instructions, component locator, test procedures, reference values and waveforms, and over a million times aver tips including code tips, symptom tips and more.  Plus, with its WiFi connection to the internet, it is always accessing the latest, most up to date data.

While this might sound like a plug for VERUS®, the point is that it is an example of the sizeable investment we've made in having the best tools and technology available in order to repair and maintain your  car.  Without the right tools, many repairs and diagnoses are impossible, and with the best tools in the hands of the best mechanics, problems are found more quickly, with more accuracy (avoiding costly trial and error, and repeat trips back to the shop), and repaired faster (thus cheaper) with quality you can depend on (which means peace of mind on the road).
